Rear shot, captured in Unreal Engine

Ernest Shackleton’s hut, originally built in 1908 as part of an Antarctic expedition, recreated as a game environment in Unreal Engine 5. I originally created this in UE4 then later updated/tweaked it - but the hut itself, main props and terrain base have barely changed from the original.

I started by collating various references, I wanted to stay faithful to how it looked over a century ago but use a touch of artistic license where necessary - the hut has changed slightly over the years and I couldn’t find many pictures that go this far back. I then created a block out to help break down the required modular elements and determine how this would all fit into a single trim sheet. I also highlighted various props and decided the most efficient way to fit all these into a single texture atlas. I then pieced together the final structure/scene in Unreal and used the terrain tool to create the landscape. To polish this off I used a bunch of megascans and library assets to dress the scene (penguins and some terrain details i.e. more rocks and snow piles). Finally decals were added for extra detail.

Created in 3DS Max, ZBrush, Substance Painter (PBR) and Unreal Engine 5.
